In-Flight Skincare Tips & Treatments that Really Work

Traveling -- specifically by airplane -- comes with some potential skin health hazards: cramped quarters, germs, dry cabin air, travel stress (just getting through security can be rough)... we could go on. There’s an art to creating the perfect in-flight beauty routine to combat this perfect storm for skincare problems, whether you’re stretched out in first class or fighting for overhead bin space in economy.

Here’s a look at our top TSA-approved in-flight skincare tips!

Long Flights = AMist Opportunity!

A facial mist is optional and should be chosen for comfort. It does not tighten pores permanently or replace moisturizer. Avoid spraying a new fragranced product near the eyes or other passengers.

Our favorite little rose-water benefits and formula considerations will help your skin stay hydrated in-flight and leave you feeling fresh-faced and ready for the next part of your adventure.

Fly Makeup Free (But Go Heavy on Hydration)

Keep travel skincare manageable. If you remove makeup, use a familiar product and gentle contact rather than repeated wiping. See the makeup-removal guide.

Travel does not require a new mask or an especially heavy layer. Use a familiar moisturizer that stays comfortable. If you enjoy a hydrating mask, choose one whose directions and removal you can follow hygienically.

Give Yourself an In-Flight Facial

No list of skincare travel tips is complete without mention of the in-flight facial (yes, it’s a thing!). Here’s how to do it:

  • Start by removing makeup. When it comes to in-flight skincare tips, this one is worth repeating. If you wore makeup onto the plane, now is the time to remove it. Makeup wipes or a travel-size bottle of micellar water and cotton rounds will keep you clean in the air.

  • Mist for moisture. Apply a mist to prep skin for serums and moisturizer. Continue to spritz as needed throughout the flight.

  • Apply a hydrating serum. Recycled cabin air can cause major dehydration, so serums are an essential part of any effective in-flight beauty routine.

  • Nourish with oil. The omega fatty acids in facial oils have been proven to moisturize and boost elasticity, both of which will benefit your post-plane complexion. Find the best facial oil for your skin type here

  • Apply a familiar moisturizer when needed for comfort. A richer texture is not automatically better for every traveler, and an optional mask should not replace your usual care. Compare mask and moisturizer roles.

  • Do not leave a sheet mask on throughout a long flight or turn a rinse-off product into a sleeping mask. Follow product-specific mask timing and removal.

    Pack Products that Multitask

Carry-on space is limited, so keep it simple by packing multi-purpose products. Think sunscreen that doubles as a moisturizer and tinted cream stains that can be used to color lipsand cheeks.

Bonus tip: drink lots of water! According to the Aerospace Medical Association, you should be drinking about eight ounces of water for every hour you’re in the air. Here’s to hydrating (skincare) in the sky!
