Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A. Applied topically, retinol is converted to retinoic acid which actively impacts skin cells. This ingredient is most well known for its anti-aging benefits that include evening skin tone, softening wrinkles, encouraging cell turnover, and collagen production. It’s also been shown to improve skin texture and boost exfoliation.
To get the most out of your retinol serum, there are a few important steps to follow.
First, use retinol products in your nighttime skincare routine to start. If you have sensitive skin or are new to the ingredient, try incorporating retinol into your routine every other night or every 2-3 nights until you acclimate.
Second, prepare your skin to get the best absorption. Use a deep but gentle cleanser to remove all oils and makeup from your skin. After cleansing, use a mild toner to remove anything left behind.
Now, you’re ready to apply your serum. Apply a few drops to your fingertips and gently pat the serum into your skin. Be sure to let it fully absorb for a couple of minutes before layering on other serums or creams.
A retinol cream is a thicker-textured lotion containing an active retinol ingredient. Typically you’ll find these as night creams.
Retinol creams are used for the same benefits serums are used for - primarily anti-aging, skin tone, texture refining and plumping. Creams and serums both deliver active ingredients to skin.
Serums are designed with thinner formulas based in oil or water, designed to be absorbed more readily and layered with other products. Serums are suitable for all skin types, including oily skin, as a suitable moisturizer can be layered on top. Creams are typically applied as the last step in a skincare routine, after serums.
